June 22-26 (Last week!)

Bonjour tout le monde!  Il fait chaud! We are heading into our last week of online school. So many of you have been doing an amazing job joining meets, sharing Flipgrids, completing worksheets, writing journal entries, learning new things like Screencastify, asking questions via e-mail, reading, doing duolingo and presentations. I hope you will continue to do a little French through the summer. I will keep your Duolingo accounts open so you can continue to practice. Grade fours will continue to have access to A-Z levelled readers. You may continue exploring the online games linked on my blog or watching the French songs linked on my blog as well. There are Netflix shows in French too.

I have really missed seeing you all in person, but I enjoyed watching your videos and was so happy to see your creativity during this unique time.

June 15-19

Bonjour tout le monde! Please note that I have not finished checking all the work submitted last week, but I will by the end of this week. Hope you are all doing well :)

Don't forget our Google Meets this week! Grade 4s at 12:00 on Tuesday and Grade 5s at 12:30.

Grade 4:

Science:

1) Check out this website my grade fours last year made about rocks we found in our school yard and others from a Canadian rocks kit. We made 3D scans of the rocks so you can click on each rock and look at it from different angles.  https://sites.google.com/ocsb.ca/muse-virtuel-des-roches-et-des/home

2) If you haven't already, collect some interesting rocks on a walk or from your garden. See if any are like the ones from the Virtual Museum my grade fours made. Have your rocks ready to share with us at the next Google Meet! (If you already have a rock collection or kit or crystals, share those on our meet too.)

3) (Optional) Also have a look at the Museum of Nature website: https://nature.ca/fr/planifiez-votre-visite/voir-faire-musee/expositions/galerie-terre

French:

1) Take a tour of Paris and try a Kahoot!  The tour lets you look all around you with the cursor on a chromebook or laptop or by moving your ipad or mobile phone!

2) Practice some more reading on A-Z.  I can see who logs on and how many books you are reading. You will only have access to the readers this month!

Grade 5:

French:

This week you will prepare and present your last monthly presentation on Google Slides and Screencastify (or if you prefer, have someone record you on another device, but I recommend Screencastify as an excellent tool going forward.)  Make this one your best yet!  Upload your presentations to Flipgrid: https://flipgrid.com/f26bfe1b

Also, take a tour of Paris and try a Kahoot!  The tour lets you look all around you with the cursor on a chromebook or laptop or by moving your ipad or mobile phone!

June 8-12

Bonjour tout le monde. J'espère que tout va bien!  Please note that I have to change the google Meet day from Tuesday to Wednesday this week!! I will send out the invitations early this time to remind you. Grade 4s will do a chat and kahoot at 12:00 and Grade 5s will do their chat and kahoot at 12:30 ON WEDNESDAY!  Other than that, here is the work for the week:

Grade 4:

French:

1) Please write in your journal this week. All entries should be in the same document please, preferably adding to your existing Journal 2020 Google Doc (or create one if one doesn't already exist). Remember to use past tense! (J'ai regardé..., etc.)  Add details ("avec", "C'était délicieux", le matin... etc.)  Write at least four sentences (preferably five or more) and try to write an entry for at least three days this week. Avoid writing the same things. If you say you watched a movie, try to tell me about it if you are looking for things to write and are doing similar things each day. Don't forget the date at the top!

2) Read a French levelled reader of your choice on Flipgrid. You will not see your video or anyone else's to encourage everyone to do this without being shy. Definitely choose a book at your level (I indicated an approximate level for everyone, but you can go up or down depending on how comfortable you feel. I see that only about five students practiced on the A-Z reading site last week. If you have any trouble logging on, e-mail me. Go to https://www.raz-kids.com/ and click the Green "Kids Login". My teacher username is fraschool.  I e-mailed everyone their passwords. Here is the flipgrid code: https://flipgrid.com/fcb284f3  I made an explanation video earlier to show how to read and record on flipgrid, please watch it!

Optional:

Duolingo and collect different looking rocks you find on your walks outside or in your backyard in preparation for science next week!  You can also watch this video of Magic School Bus in French about water and rocks.

Grade 5:

French:

Please write in your journal this week. All entries should be in the same document please, preferably adding to your existing Journal 2020 Google Doc (or create one if one doesn't already exist). Remember to use past tense! (J'ai regardé..., etc.)  Add details ("avec", "C'était délicieux", le matin... etc.)  Write at least seven sentences (preferably eight or more) and try to write an entry for at least three days this week. Avoid writing the same things. If you say you watched a movie, try to tell me about it if you are looking for things to write and are doing similar things each day. Use Wordreference.com and Bonpatron.com. Don't forget the date at the top!

Science:

I have shared two documents in your science folder to do with solubility of matter. (Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve). Please complete the one indicating if you think each substance is soluble or insoluble. The other is an experiment with things you should hopefully have at home. Read the instructions for both, looking up any words you do not understand.

Other:

Duolingo. Watch this short animated video about condensation and evaporation and what happens to water molecules during these changes in state. Get a headstart on your last Google Slide presentation which will be the main task  to prepare and present next week. It will be our last monthly presentation and the topic is free choice. If you need ideas, e-mail me.

Monday, 1 June 2020

June 1-5

Bonjour! We will try to play a game of Kahoot on Tuesday so don't be late to the Meet!
Voici le travail pour la semaine:

Grade 4:

Social Studies:

This week you get to make your model castles! Please use the worksheet that you labelled last week to ensure that your castle has most or all of those parts. Check your recycle bin for cardboard or other materials to help you. You can also use lego or playdough if you have some.  The important thing is to make the model and then identify the parts. You can label them on pieces of paper and/or give us a video tour of your castle!  If you added other things, like a knight for example, feel free to say those too.

Use the following sentences to help you:  "C'est le ..." (for one thing like le pont-lévis) or "Ce sont les...." (for many things like les murs).

Optional:
Duolingo or journal entries. Please share with me if you do a journal entry. (We will be doing one of these soon as an assignment again so this would be good practice!)

Also- You have been added to A-Z reading. Practice reading some levelled readers this week as next week this will be part of the assigned work. Go to: https://www.raz-kids.com/ Click the green "Kids Login". The Username (Teacher) is "Fraschool". Find your name and I have e-mailed your password to you.

Grade 5:

Science:

1) Take a look at the Google Slide presentation I put together that is shared with you (check your e-mail), especially the videos on it showing States of Matter and Physical Vs Chemical Changes to Matter.  (*Note that my son did the video editing and there are a couple of "jokes").

2) Start a Google Slide of your own and add 10 images and identify whether they are solid, liquid or gas. You can take photos of things around your home or use the search images function.

3) At the end of your Slide deck, add a video of yourself preparing a simple meal or snack and identifying physical or chemical changes that occur (similar to the video I made). It would be great if you can also say the names of the food or drinks in French and even the recipe instructions if you can.  Work to your level! If you want to do a full on cooking show video, go ahead! If you prefer to take photos as you cook, bake or prepare something and then label them as a physical or chemical change that is fine too. **PLEASE WORK UNDER PARENT SUPERVISION IF YOU ARE USING A SHARP KNIFE OR A STOVE OR OVEN!!!!

4) Don't forget to share the Google Slides with me!

Optional:
Duolingo or journal entries. Please share with me if you do a journal entry. (We will be doing one of these soon as an assignment again so this would be good practice!)

Monday, 25 May 2020

May 25-29

Bonjour tout le monde! Don't forget our Google Meet this Tuesday! Grade 4s at 12:00 and Grade 5s at 12:30. I will send the invite about ten minutes before. Here is the work for this week:

Grade 4:

Social Studies

1) Listen to the following video: Les parties d'un château. Complete the worksheet shared in your Social Studies folder in your Google Drive by identifying the various parts of a castle.

2) Watch and answer the questions during this video. (I have put a question where you write your name- of course that will not be graded as it says!)

French

Find something for Show and Tell which we will present at this week's Google Meet. Practice a bit before so you know how to talk about your treasure in French.  If you won't be able to join the Google Meet, then please do your Show and Tell on Flipgrid using this link: https://flipgrid.com/c3a92fcf .

Optional:  Continue with duolingo or journal entries. Next week, I will be giving you access to the levelled readers on A-Z reading. In the meantime, take a look at some stories written by other students on La bibliothèque virtuelle. You need to be signed in to your student Google account to access this. (Also, the class books are here!!! I will figure out how to get them to you soon.)

Grade 5:

Drama
As I e-mailed last week, most students needed more time to finish the drama project (see last week's blog post for details) so I will assign less this week expecting that this will also be finished.

French
Next week, I will be giving the access to the A-Z reading books to the Grade 4s. This week, I have assigned one book in particular that you should see when you sign into your account. It is a level G book called "Ma journée". Please read it.  Once you have read it, use it as a base to write a detailed journal entry about your daily schedule. Use the vocabulary from the book like "Je me lève" and add the time if you can "à 9h00."  You can also write sentences like: "De 10h00 à 11h00 je fais mes devoirs." Instead of a journal entry, you may do this in google slides with photos or drawings. Whether you choose to do this in your Google Doc journal or in a Google Slide like a little reader, please share your work with me when you are finished so I know where it is and that it is ready to be checked. *If you are finished your drama or not planning to do it, then I recommend doing the Google Slides version of this task.

Finally, find something for Show and Tell which we will present at this week's Google Meet. Practice a bit before so you know how to talk about your treasure in French.  If you won't be able to join the Google Meet, then please do your Show and Tell on Flipgrid using this link: https://flipgrid.com/6de99e82 .

Optional:  Continue with duolingo or journal entries. Read some other levelled readers of your choice on A-Z reading. Next week you will no longer have access.

Tuesday, 19 May 2020

May 19-22

Hope everyone had a good weekend. If you posted a Flipgrid video last week, I responded to every one so make sure you take a look and let me know if you don't see a response.

We will be doing our Google Meets. We'll try a guessing game this week. Describe an object you are hiding behind your back or in a box and see if we can guess. Grade 4s will start at 12:00 and Grade 5s will start at 12:30. I may divide into smaller groups next week.

Looks like it will be a beautiful week weather-wise, so I will incorporate some outdoor time into this week's work :)

As usual, please e-mail me with any questions about the work after taking a look at it if you still don't understand.

GRADE 4

Social Studies:

We are starting Medieval Times! It's the time of knights and castles. It was a time where you were mostly born into your station in life (class or job). There was a hierarchy which means a few people were at the top who were the most important, powerful and rich. Under them, were the next most important or powerful people. Most people were at the bottom and they did not have an education, money or power.

There is a Google Doc in your Social Studies folder called "Le système féodal" listing the kinds of people who lived then and asking you to place them where you think they go in the pyramid (a hierarchy). Fill in the blank boxes.

Next, there is a PDF with instructions on how to do the task "Mes armoiries personnelles". Please use the Google Drawing with just the Coat of Arms template. You may print it out and draw on it or do it digitally by inserting pictures into each section.  (The first section should be something that symbolizes Canada for you, the next is something you've accomplished and something that represents your ancestors. At the bottom, please draw something that is important for your family and something that makes you happy. Try to write some words or short sentences to explain your choices of drawings or pictures in French.)  This was hard to explain in writing, so please e-mail or message on class dojo with any questions after taking a look at both documents!

Optional: Duolingo and/or go for a walk and write in your journal what you saw.

GRADE 5

Drama

Because we didn't finish our drama presentations (new versions of a old famous stories done on google slides and narrated with sound effects if possible), you have a choice.

CHOOSE ONE OPTION:

1) Make a copy of the google slides your group was working on and finish it on your own. Use Screencastify to present it changing your voice for each part or getting family members to help you present. (Present only part of it if you feel it is too long.) Share the screencastify with me when finished.

2) Make a copy of the google slides that your group was working on and finish it with some others from your group who would like to continue working collaboratively. I am not sure how you would present this collaboratively, but if you have an idea, you can let me know. Otherwise, same as in the first choice, get your family to help you or change your voice for each part and use Screencastify. Share the screencastify with me when finished.

4) Take the play "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" (Les trois boucs bourrus) and make a puppet show at home and record it with you changing your voice for each part or even getting some family members to help you.  I will send everyone a copy of the play in their Drama folder in Google Drive. E-mail me a copy of the video.

5) Let me know if you have another idea you would like to try.

****IMPORTANT:  E-mail me to let me know which option you will be doing and if you need access to your group documents if you need them.****

Optional: Duolingo, A-Z French levelled readers and/or go for a walk and write in your journal what you saw.

Sunday, 10 May 2020

May 11- 15

How is everyone doing this week? I will be starting a new round of calls to check in. Also, don't forget our Google Meets on Tuesday! Grade fours are at 12:00 and Grade fives are at 12:30. Join if you can, even if you don't have a question. Let us know how you are and what you've been up to (and what you did for your mom for Mother's Day!)

Ok, here is this week's work!

Grade 4:

Science:
I would like to go offscreen this week and ask you to do a hands-on project to do with light or sound. This means I would like you to use materials ALREADY FOUND AROUND YOUR HOUSE to make either a periscope or a kaleidoscope both of which use light reflected in mirrors OR you can make a musical instrument which obviously uses sound.  Do not buy anything! Do not do all three projects!  Please watch these two videos for ideas and expectations: Part one and Part 2.  These are also available on Flipgrid. Code:  fc50f36f .  After you have made your project, show it to us using that same Flipgrid code. Try to talk about it in French (how you made it, how it works).

Optional:
Duolingo or journal or one of the French practice games (links are on the side bar of this blog.)

Grade 5:

Reading:
As I mentioned last week, this week I would like you to record yourself reading one of the leveled readers you've been practicing reading. Please do or share your recording on Flipgrid using this code: b7b32f30 . Please note that you will not be able to see your own video or anyone else's. Only I will be able to see them once they are submitted. Watch this video with suggestions on how to do this task: video . (I also e-mailed a link to all grade fives).

Science:
Make a model of a human body system or a part of a human body system using things you have around the house. You may choose to do the same model as I do in this flipgrid video or you may choose to do all or part of another system (for example, skeletal, digestive, circulatory (blood), or nervous system). Please try to make part of your model "work" or move in some way as the lung does in the example model I made. When you are finished, show and explain your model in French (how you made it, the various parts and a bit about how they work) on Flipgrid using this code: b806f70 .

Optional:
Duolingo or journal or one of the French practice games (links are on the side bar of this blog.)
