Bonjour tout le monde! Comment ça va? Voici le travail pour la semaine:

Grade 4: 

Science: 

1) Watch this video of some simple experiments about sound (le son). Try one or two of these experiments at home. Fill in the Google Doc in your Science folder in Google drive with the information about the experiment you choose to do (les matériaux, les instructions, l'hypothèse, l'observation, la conclusion) like we have done in class before.

Note:  You can print the sheet and write or draw by hand and send me a photo of the finished sheet. Or you can attach photos or videos of you trying the experiment(s) into the Google doc. Or, just write what you can in French in the document. *There are two experiments on the Google Doc, but depending on your timing, you can just fill out the first one. Please be sure to leave enough time to also do #2 below.)

2)  In the Science folder of your Google Drive there is a second document called "Transparent, Translucide et Opaque."  Use this video to see examples of what to do and what the words mean, then complete the document.  The first box on the document is done as an example. 

Optional: 

As always, you can do Duolingo and journal entries. I automatically get weekly reports for Duolingo so I can see who is on, but if you do a journal entry please be sure to share it with me so I know you are writing them!

New!: For those who like drawing, try this excellent tutorial on how to draw a simple face. Change some things to make it original (or a self-portrait) by altering the hair or adding glasses for example. Be creative! If you do this activity, I would love to see a picture of your work. You can share via Class Dojo or e-mail me.

Grade 5: 

Science: Watch this video about the nervous system and this video about the circulatory system. To aid comprehension put on closed caption (CC) and on settings reduce playback speed to .75. 

Then, watch this video with some simple experiments you can try at home. Reading:

I can see that a few students tried A-Z reading last week. I would like everyone to log in and read 3-5 books at least at a level where you are comfortable reading out loud and can understand the majority of the book. Next week, I will ask you to read for me on Flipgrid, so please practice this week.

(Go to  raz-kids.com and click Kids' Login. My Teacher Username is Fraschool and last Monday I sent you an email with your password.  Go to the "Reading Room" to access the French leveled readers.)

Optional:

April 27-May 1

I hope everyone is doing ok!  Please note that I have decided to hold "Office Hours" every Tuesday for students to go on Google Meet to ask questions about the work, check in or just chat say "bonjour" to me. Grade 4s will be from 12:00-12:20 and Grade 5s will be from 12:30-12:50. I will see how many join and if the time is enough after trying it this week. It is completely optional. Email invitations will be sent a few minutes before the Meet starts.

Here is this week's work:

Grade 4s:

1) You will find a Google Doc in your Social studies folder in your Google Drive called "La Grèce ancienne et moi". You must fill in the comparison between someone who lived in Ancient Greece and you in modern times. You cannot copy and paste the sentences, but must retype them under the correct column.

2) Try this Quizziz based on the work from the Google doc (Please use your student e-mail account or your actual name). You may try two times. That will wrap up Ancient Greece for now.

3) For science, watch this video showing a simple experiment about the composition of light. Watch it two or three times and then try this Quizziz to answer questions about what you saw/learned. You can try the quiz two times.

Optional:
Duolingo, journal entry, coding in French. Also, you may try an experiment with light at home and write about it in your journal or e-mail me.

Google Meet at 12:00 on Tuesday if you have questions or want to say "bonjour" :)

Grade 5s: 

1) You will present your monthly presentation using Screencastify (that you hopefully downloaded and tried last week). Watch this video for how to do that. (You must be signed into your student google account to watch. You will also get a bit of information about La Nouvelle France as that is the example slide deck I use so please be sure to watch!)

* (If you prefer, or the Screencastify is not working for you, you may have someone record you presenting your slides on an ipad or chromebook instead of using screencastify. Upload the video to your Google Drive and share it with me. If you have another way you would prefer to present, by all means, do that as long as you can share it with me.)

2) For Science, please watch the following video and answer questions as you go along: La digestion

3) I have set everyone set up on A-Z reading.  You can get the Kids A-Z app on an ipad, tablet or phone or you can go to your Student Portal and access RazKids (or raz-kids.com) and click on "Kids login". Username (Teacher) is Fraschool and I will send you an email with your password Monday morning.  Go to the "Reading Room" to access the French leveled readers. I have assigned you a general level, but you can access levels below and above depending how difficult or easy you are finding the books.  I will be able to see which and how many books you read.

Optional:
You can do duolingo, a journal entry or some coding in French on code.org (I prefer Angry Birds, Minecraft or Flappy bird for actual use of French coding.)

April 20-24

I hope everyone is doing ok!  Ms. Kerry is now doing weekly announcements on Flipgrid! Feel free to send me a photo of you participating in Spirit days that I can share on Class Dojo and Twitter!

Here is this week's work. As always, message me on Dojo or e-mail me if you have any questions!

Grade 4: 

1) Please go to your Social Studies folder in your Google Drive. A reading has been shared in a Google Doc about daily life in Ancient Greece. The document is called "La Grèce ancienne de Lysandre".
2) There is a flipgrid of me reading the document and explaining some words and concepts from the reading. Please listen to it before or as you read the document. (Link is on the document).
3)There is second Google Doc in your Social Studies folder with questions to be answered about the reading.  Please write in full sentences if you can.
4) Next, for Science please write in your journal a list at least three or more examples of light (natural or man made).  Then close your eyes and listen for at least three or more sounds that you hear inside or outside of your house.  Write those down too! Please look up any words you don't know in French using wordreference.com
5) Finally, send me an e-mail. You must have a subject and then a message. Please tell me two truths and a lie about yourself in the e-mail and I will try to guess which is the lie! Watch this video for how to do this.
6) On Friday, complete the survey about this week's work that I will send to your e-mail.

Optional: If you would like to do extra work, please continue to do Duolingo, a  regular journal entry or coding. Also, I recommend watching episodes of "Mythic Warriors- Guardians of the Legend" available on Youtube which is an old animation series produced by Canada and France about the Greek Myths. Unfortunately, these are only available in English that I have been able to find.  Here is a link to one of the videos.

Grade 5: 

1) Finish working on the project "Les inventions autochtones".  You will need to look at last week's instructions. Here are two examples of student work for those unsure what to do (you will need to sign into your student Google account to see them):  Example 1  Example 2

2) Monthly presentations: If you did not finish your monthly presentation before March Break, please complete it (Ton film, ton acteur ou ton chanteur (groupe de musique) préféré).

3) Download Screencastify if you don't already have it.  Here is the link:  https://www.screencastify.com/  Play around with it this week after you have installed it to try and familiarize yourself with how it works. 

4) Finally, send me an e-mail. You must have a subject and then a message. Please tell me two truths and a lie about yourself in the e-mail and I will try to guess which is the lie! Watch this video for how to do this.

5) On Friday, complete the survey about this week's work that I will send to your e-mail.



Optional:

If you finished most of this week's work last week, you can continue working on April's presentation (Ton sport préféré d’été, d’hiver ou les deux).  I will cancel May's presentation and have one last presentation in June which will be free choice. Presentations will be made using Screencastify. I WILL GIVE MORE TIME NEXT WEEK TO FINISH AND RECORD THESE PRESENTATIONS.

April 14-17

Welcome to week 2 of distance learning. (I miss you!)  I hope you are getting out for some fresh air and doing some exercise. There will be another survey at the end of this week to see how you found the work. As always, if you have any questions please e-mail me or send me a message on Dojo!

Grade 4: You will listen to and read information about life in Ancient Greece.  I have sent a Google slides presentation to your Social Studies file through Hapara. You can only view it and click the links to other readings. Click the audio symbol on each slide to hear information about the slide topic.  PLEASE DO NOT WORRY IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING YOU HEAR OR READ.  You can review the slides a few times and replay the audio. If you understand a small thing from each page, that is great! Use the pictures to help your comprehension. When doing the readings, you may also use wordreference.com to help you.  Again, you do not need to understand every word.  It is normal when learning a new language to not understand everything. You should try to understand the basic idea of the readings.

After you have looked at, listened to and read the information in the Google Slides, please write in your digital journal a self-introduction as though you are living in Ancient Greece based on what you learned. (Don't forget to write the date in French at the top of your Ancient Greek self-intro).

Here is a website with Ancient Greek names- please choose an Ancient Greek name! In your self-intro answer the following questions (and more if you can!): What is your name? Where do you live? What's your favourite food? What do you wear? You can be creative with this. Please write at least five sentences (more preferred).  (Je m'appelle... / J'habite.../ Ma nourriture préférée c'est..../Je porte.../ J'aime.../ Mon papa.../ etc.)

If you want to do extra study this week, continue to work on duolingo and/or do a real journal entry.  You may also do some coding in French using this link and making sure you switch the language to French: Minecraft Coding practice  Let me know what level you get to in the survey at the end of the week!


Grade 5:  You will do a Google Slides presentation about "Les inventions autochtones" (inventions by Indigenous people from Canada.)  You can use the following links to get you started on your research:

Link 3 (some repetition with link 1)

Your presentation should have two parts. First, list the five most useful inventions in your life and second, list what you think are the five most useful inventions for Canadian society.  These are probably going to be different, though a few may be the same. You should include images and explanations. Use wordreference.com and bonpatron.com please. When you have completed DO NOT SHARE IT WITH ME. Please set the sharing option to "anyone with a link". (Watch this video for how to do that). Then you may add your presentation to my Padlet wall: bit.ly/hatanoinvent (watch this video for how to do this) Please note I used a Google slide presentation I prepared for my grade fours as an example, so please don't be confused! Your Google slides should be about "Les inventions autochtones".)  You should be able to see each others' Google Slides on the Padlet.


If you want to do extra study this week, try making  and explaining an invention of your own. You can do this in a Google Draw, Google Slides or other way of your choice as long as you share it with me. You can also continue to work on duolingo and/or do a journal entry.  We will continue doing our monthly presentations so you can work on that too. I will give instructions on how to present these in the next couple of weeks.

le 6 au 9 avril

Hello Parents and students! This is a short week! Aim to do about 1.5 hours of French work this week, balancing with your English work.  Do what you can.

Basically, all students have a vocabulary sheet for social studies that they must add pictures to and then they will do a quiz game to practice what they've learned.  Students are also asked to write a short prayer of thanks in preparation for Easter in their journals.

As next Monday is Easter Monday, I will post next week's work on Tuesday.  Have a great week everyone! Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

4) Finally, watch an Easter Simon's cat video:  Hop It: Easter Eggstravaganza . This is optional :)

5) If you wish to do more work, feel free to write an actual journal entry for this week or continue increasing your points on Duolingo.

6) On Thursday, I will send a survey via e-mail to students to see how this week went. Please be sure to check your school e-mail account for this on Thursday!! (I will send a reminder through Class Dojo).

Welcome to a Whole New Era!

Welcome students and families to a blog I started years ago and which I have decided will be the easiest way to share resources and expectations going forward as we all learn how to learn from a distance!

First and foremost- your health (including mental health) is the most important. The government is asking each K-6 student complete 5 hours of work per week. Try doing 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon each day. By all means, do more if you like and are motivated.  The five hours is for literacy (English and French), Math, Science and Social Studies. However, I do feel that continuing to learn and practice the arts is important and I plan to offer options for that too. Moving your body is important like you do in Phys.Ed., so I might ask you to make a rainy day exercise routine or a map of where you walk. Prayer is important and so is being grateful for our ongoing blessings and I will definitely ask you to do both in French! In addition, life skills like helping around the house with cleaning and cooking are important, especially these days!  I might ask you for a recipe or an easy cooking video with your parents' help. Playing games and having fun is important, so expect to see these kinds of activities be included in "homework" as well! (Yes, in French!) These and many more activities can be done in French, talked or written about in French and researched or followed in French.  We have already done many of these kinds of activities in  class, especially during centres so students should be pros and leaders in their own learning!

Self-directed study is also encouraged, but please don't forget to share what you do! For example, my son became interested in sign language watching press conferences and seeing the person signing in the background. He also made some stop-motion videos. I know one of my students is writing a book and I believe another is writing stories for her brother. If you make a French version of a story or video, send me a copy! If you draw a picture, share it and write about it in French. If you learn a new skill like looming or build a fort in your living room, write about it in your journal using lots of details like size, colour and steps involved.

Don't forget to continue using wordreference.com and bonpatron.com to help with your writing. DO NOT use any online translators including Google translate or DeepL!!!! This takes away from actual practice writing in French and is a form of cheating. As always my rule is work at your own level. I want to see and give feedback on your (the students') French, no matter how short or simple.  I do not feel the need to give feedback on the online translator's French :)

Finally, let's be creative and also patient. This is a new experience for all of us. I am excited to see our remote learning journeys (including my own!). Now, as in class, making an effort is my most important expectation. Êtes-vous prêts? On commence!
